Breakdown

Stick out of Singleback Deuce Close Tilt is a classic quick-passing concept built around a stick route (a hitch and out combo from the slot) paired with a flat route and an underneath crosser, giving the quarterback a fast-timing option against both man and zone coverage. With 21 personnel on the field, the extra back and tight end give you strong protection and multiple check-down options, making this a reliable zone beater against Cover 3 and Cover 4 drop zones while also holding up against man pressure via the stick's built-in separation. The primary read starts with the stick route in the flat-to-seam window, then works to the flat route underneath, and finishes with the crosser as the backside answer if the initial reads are covered.

Defensive Reads

Check safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties usually signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which means the flat route should be your first look since the stick will be squeezed by an underneath zone defender. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into the stick's landing zone before the ball is out, hit the flat route in stride to punish the overcommitment. Identify man coverage by looking for defenders lining up in press or trail technique, in this case the stick route's built-in separation move will win versus man beaters and should be your first target. Look for nano blitz indicators such as a linebacker or slot corner creeping toward the line pre-snap, since Stick's quick timing negates most delayed blitzes but can be exposed by an immediate interior rush if protection is not adjusted. Beware of a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the stick's window, since a smart user will bait the quick throw and jump the route, so consider working to the crosser or flat if you see a defender hovering unnaturally deep in that zone.

Usage Tips

Use Stick on early downs and third-and-short situations where a quick, high-percentage throw is more valuable than a deep shot.

Identify the coverage shell pre-snap: against Cover 3 sink the stick route into the hole between the corner and the linebacker, against Cover 2 hit the flat route before the corner can sink under it.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, this gives you an extra man-beater option without changing the base concept.

Pair Stick with Mtn HB Misdirection Lt or HB Dive from the same set to keep the defense honest on early downs, then come back to Stick once the linebackers start creeping up to defend the run.

Use PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Boot Slide later in a series after establishing Stick, since the quick game tendencies will bait linebackers into jumping underneath routes, opening up the play-action window.
