HB Zone Wk is a weak side zone run out of Singleback Deuce Close Tilt with 21 personnel, designed to get the offensive line flowing left while the fullback and tight end seal the edge for the running back to press the hole and read blocks. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so there are no man or zone beater route combos to key on. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is the backside guard and center combo block, then bounce outside off the fullback's kick out block or cut upfield if the alley is sealed by the tight end.
Look at the defensive line alignment pre-snap, if there is a 3 technique or 4i shading toward the play side weak flow, the cutback lane behind the center will be there if the linebacker overpursues. Identify if the Mike linebacker is flowing hard with the zone action or staying home, aggressive user controlled Mike linebackers that key the fullback's kick out will open up cutback running lanes. Watch for run blitzes off the edge from the weak side, if the defense brings a linebacker or safety off that edge pre-snap, the fullback's block can be beaten and the play loses its designed gap, so be ready to cut it up quickly. This run struggles against gap sound 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with disciplined linebackers who stay in their lanes and do not bite on flow, since there is no misdirection to hold them. Check safety depth before the snap, if a safety is stacked in the box as an eighth defender expect a quick fill on the play side, which favors bouncing this run outside toward the tight end's block instead of forcing it up the middle.
Run this out of a run heavy personnel look to keep linebackers honest and force them to respect the weak side flow before you attack with play action shots later in the drive.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow at 3 to 4 yards they are likely keying run fits, so consider audibling to a play action shot like PA Boot Slide or Mtn PA Flood instead.
Use HB Zone Wk on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, to stay ahead of the chains and set up explosive shot plays off similar formation and personnel looks.
Pair this play with Mtn Zone Toss and Mtn Zone Fake Jet in the same set so defenders have to respect multiple zone run angles and misdirection out of the identical Deuce Close Tilt look, this keeps linebackers guessing on flow direction.
If the defense shows a stacked box with 8 or more defenders inside the tackles pre-snap, check out of this run and into a quick pass like Stick to punish the aggressive front.
