Breakdown

PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Deuce Close Tilt 21 personnel that uses run-blocking action to sell the fake before the QB boots to the edge. The concept is designed to attack zone defenses with a slide progression underneath while the boot action holds linebackers and safeties for a beat, opening up throwing lanes on the move. Primary read progression starts with the flat or drag route breaking toward the boot side, works to the intermediate slide route crossing the middle, and comes back to a checkdown or the far side underneath route if the pocket collapses.

Defensive Reads

Key the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap. If they step hard toward the run fake, the slide route underneath will be wide open in the vacated middle zone. Watch for a spy or contain defender on the boot side edge. A disciplined edge defender who stays home instead of crashing on the run fake can blow up the rollout before the QB gets outside the tackle box. Identify Cover 3 shells pre-snap by checking corner depth and single high safety alignment. This play beats Cover 3 well because the flat and slide routes attack the seams between the underneath zone defenders. Against man coverage with a blitz, look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the throwing lane on the boot side, since aggressive human defenders often bait the flat throw before jumping the route. If the defense shows heavy pressure with a nano blitz look pre-snap, expect the boot to get chased down quickly, so be ready to throw earlier in the progression rather than extending the play.

Usage Tips

Run this out of early down and medium distance situations, ideally second or third and manageable, so the run fake actually holds linebackers.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. If you see two high safeties sitting deep, the boot action combined with the slide route usually opens a soft spot underneath since defenders bite on run action less against split safety looks.

Use the rollout to buy extra time against exotic pressure looks, since the QB is moving away from backside edge rushers and simplifies the protection read.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Stretch earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect the run fake, then dial up PA Boot Slide to cash in on linebacker overaggression.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing route if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, since the boot naturally creates rub potential against man defenders trailing across the field.
