HB Stretch out of Singleback Ace Double Wing is an outside zone run play with 23 personnel, using two wing tight ends and a fullback for extra blocking support on the edge. The offensive line flows laterally toward the play side, stretching the defense horizontally while the HB reads the blocking to find a cutback lane, aiming to bounce outside on the tight end and wing kick outs or cut back behind the zone flow. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the HB is playside cutback lane first, then bounce outside if the edge is sealed, then backside cutback if the interior clogs.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, a single high safety with stacked linebackers signals a run heavy front that can clog the stretch lanes. Watch for linebackers cheating toward the play side pre-snap, this often means a run blitz or edge crash designed to blow up outside zone before it develops. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, if they string the play out without getting up field, the cutback lane opens for the HB. User controlled defenders flying downhill to the edge can be exploited with a QB counter or bootleg action off this same look, since disciplined run fits are vulnerable to misdirection. Stacked fronts with extra linebackers or a nano blitz look up front will shut this run down, so respect heavy fronts and be ready to check to a pass if the box count is unfavorable.
Run HB Stretch on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots out of this same personnel grouping.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 23 personnel, consider audibling to a play-action pass instead.
Use the extra wing tight ends and fullback to identify overloaded fronts, if the defense stacks the play side edge, be ready to cut the HB back against the grain.
Pair this play with Fake HB Zone QB Boot Lt or PA Boot Lt from the same set to punish linebackers who key hard on stretch flow and bite on run fits.
Against aggressive user defenders flowing hard to the play side, mix in HB Counter Wk to keep the defense guessing and slow down their run fit recognition.
