Breakdown

Sluggo Seam out of Shotgun Wing Tight shows two receivers to the closed side working a vertical stretch. The outside receiver runs a sluggo (slant and go) that breaks inside then explodes upfield to attack the deep third, while the inside slot receiver climbs a seam route straight up the hash before bending it toward the numbers on a whip style adjustment. This is a man beater designed to attack off the sluggo's double move, and the primary read progression starts with the seam route for a quick vertical shot before working outside to the sluggo if the corner bites on the initial break.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, this tips man coverage and opens up the sluggo's double move for an explosive gain. Watch the corner's press technique at the line, if he is jamming hard and reading run first he is vulnerable to the slant and go stem. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, if he sinks into a deep zone drop the seam route will get squeezed and you should progress to the sluggo outside. Look for two deep safeties rotating post-snap into Cover 2 or Cover 4, this coverage shell takes away the vertical shots and forces you to check down quickly. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in a lurk position over the seam, since a good user read can jump the throw before it reaches the intended window.

Usage Tips

Attack single high shells and press man coverage since the sluggo route thrives on corners jumping the slant fake before it releases vertical.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the slot defender, if he is playing outside leverage the seam route wins immediately on a free release up the hash.

Use hot routes to slide the seam runner into a shallow drag if you diagnose zone coverage post-snap, since the seam window shrinks against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells.

Pair this play with PA X Curl or Mesh Spot in your call sheet to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and underneath option routes out of the same personnel look.

Best used on second and medium to long or first down shot plays when you want to test if the defense is playing aggressive man coverage across the formation.
