Mesh Spot out of Shotgun Wing Tight sends two crossing shallow routes underneath (the mesh) while a third receiver runs a spot route sitting at the sticks, with the wing tight end releasing to the flat and the outside receiver on a deep vertical clear-out. The backfield stays in to protect, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his options. This is a classic man beater that also holds up against zone thanks to the natural rub created by the crossing routes, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow mesh crossers before working to the spot route and finally the flat as a checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Watch for linebackers sitting flat footed at the snap, since that usually signals zone coverage and the spot route becomes the priority target. Man coverage shows up when defenders trail the crossers through the mesh point instead of passing them off, which is your cue to let the route develop and hit the receiver popping open on the other side. Cover 3 defenders will often collapse on the shallow crossers, opening a throwing lane to the spot route sitting at the sticks. Watch the flat defender on the tight end's release, since a hard squeeze on the mesh action can leave the flat wide open for an easy checkdown. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge are the biggest threat, so keep an eye on protection and be ready to get the ball out quickly to the shallow crosser or spot route before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap identify whether the defense is showing man or zone by checking if the linebackers are shaded over the mesh crossers or sitting in zone drops.
Against man coverage, trust the natural pick created by the two crossers and let your receivers work through traffic before checking the ball down.
Against zone, target the spot route sitting underneath the sticks since it settles into soft spots created by the mesh action drawing linebackers away.
Use motion or a quick hot route on the deep vertical to hold the safety and prevent an easy jump on the crossers.
