Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties, since that usually signals a zone shell that lets your spot and drag sit in soft areas underneath. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard to take away the mesh crossers, the drag underneath becomes open as the checkdown. User controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position near the mesh point are the biggest threat to this concept, if you see a user spy sitting in that window, avoid throwing the crossers and go directly to the spot or deep vertical. This play struggles against tight man coverage with underneath help since the mesh point can get jumped by a rat linebacker, so if you see man coverage with a robber defender in the middle of the field, prioritize the deep vertical or spot instead. Cover 3 defenses with aggressive curl to flat defenders can bait the quarterback into the spot route, so watch for a defender sitting flat footed in that zone before committing to that throw.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety shaded to the deep vertical side, look off that receiver and work the mesh crossers immediately since that usually means man coverage underneath.

Use the mesh crossers to naturally rub off man defenders, if you see two defenders colliding on the mesh point, immediately reset to the spot route sitting in the void.

This play excels on third and medium to third and long since the drag and spot give you two built in checkdowns if the initial reads are covered.

Pair this call with PA X Curl or Sluggo Seam earlier in a series to get defenders keying vertical shots, then come back to Mesh Spot to punish aggressive man coverage or spot drop zone looks.

If you are getting blitzed frequently, hot route the drag to a quick out or peek the spot route first since it settles fast and gives the quarterback a rhythm throw against pressure.
