PA Double Post is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Wing Tight that sells the run fake before releasing three vertical stems designed to attack deep zone shells. The two inside receivers cross and climb into a double post concept over the middle, while the outside receiver on the near side runs an out breaking corner style route working the sideline, and the backside X runs a lone vertical to hold the deep half defender. The blocking scheme is a play-action pass protection look that mimics the run action to freeze linebackers and open passing lanes over the top, making this primarily a Cover 2 and Cover 4 beater. The primary read progression starts with the near post working to the far post, then works out to the corner breaking route if the safeties bracket the middle.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety depth at the snap, if both safeties are sitting at 10 to 12 yards with equal width, this play is designed to split them with the double post. Watch the middle linebacker drop, if he sinks quickly and gets width on the post crossers, that user lurk threat can undercut both posts and force a checkdown. Cover 3 with a deep half robber or a single high safety sitting in the throwing lane shuts down the double post concept, since the extra defender in the middle of the field clogs both post routes. Look for man coverage disguised as zone by checking cornerback press alignment, if corners are pressed with inside shade, the double post routes can be jumped early by a well timed break. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers and rely on quick pressure can beat this play before routes fully develop, so watch for slot blitzers crashing off the edge as a defensive key against the play-action hold.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or medium to long yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in two high safety shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4.

Before the snap, identify whether the safeties are sitting deep and evenly spaced, since that tells you they are vulnerable to the double post splitting the seams.

If the corner presnap shows hard outside leverage, hot route the near post into a deep out or hitch to punish an aggressive jump on the double move.

Sell the play-action fake by holding the RB fake and using the run threat from earlier in the drive, pairing this call with Inside Zone or QB Zone to keep linebackers honest.
