Inside Zone out of Shotgun Wing Tight is a base zone run play with the offensive line stepping in unison toward the play side to create a natural cutback lane for the HB. Defensive Reads
Pre snap, count the box defenders and check for a stacked front with a linebacker cheating downhill, since that signals the defense is sitting on inside zone. Watch safety depth before the snap, a single high safety or box safety alignment usually means the defense expects run and will fill gaps quickly. Post snap, key the play side defensive tackle and linebacker fit, if they get vertical push and squeeze the gap the ball carrier should cut back immediately. Look for user controlled linebackers flowing hard downhill at the mesh point, aggressive user play from the middle linebacker often overruns the cutback lane and creates a big gap on the backside. This run struggles against gap exchange or heavy blitz fronts designed to attack the interior, since inside zone relies on the line getting movement rather than sealing a specific gap.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when you need a positive, low risk gain to stay on schedule.
Check the box count pre snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders, since stacked fronts with an extra linebacker or safety in the box will clog both zone lanes.
Manually control the HB after the handoff so you can press the hole and make a one cut decision based on whether the play side or backside lane opens up.
Pair this with a play action rollout or RPO variant from the same Wing Tight set to keep linebackers honest and slow their downhill run fits.
Avoid calling this against defenses showing heavy blitz pre snap unless you have a fullback or extra blocker assignment, since one cut zone runs are vulnerable to fast interior penetration.
