Jet Touch Pass out of Shotgun Wing Tight sends a receiver in jet motion across the formation before the snap, and the QB immediately flips a quick touch pass to him as he crosses the backfield behind the line. The offensive line shows a quick screen-style set to get bodies out in front, giving the jet man a lead blocker or two as he accelerates to the edge. This is a horizontal stretch play designed to beat aggressive man coverage and overpursuing linebackers by getting the ball out fast and using speed in space, with the primary read being the jet motion receiver as a pre-determined quick throw rather than a full progression.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a linebacker or slot corner flowing hard with the jet motion pre-snap, this is the defense signaling man coverage or a scrape exchange designed to blow up the touch pass. If the defense rotates a safety down to the motion side after the snap, that is a strong indicator of zone coverage with extra run support, which can bracket the jet man quickly. Man beater against Cover 1 and Cover 0 blitz packages since the ball is out before the rush arrives, but it struggles against disciplined zone teams that spot drop and rally to the flat. Key the edge defender or outside linebacker on the play side, if he stays home and does not bite on the fake or flow, the blockers will have a hard time creating a lane. User controlled defenders sitting in the flat or lurking underneath are the biggest threat, since a good user can jump the touch pass route and turn it into a house call the other way.

Usage Tips

Snap the ball as the jet man reaches full speed through the backfield so the touch pass timing syncs with his momentum and you avoid a negative play if he has to slow down.

Use this against defenses showing man coverage or blitz looks since the quick throw negates a fast four man rush and turns speed rushers into a non factor.

Check the flat and alley defenders before the snap, if a linebacker or corner is sitting right in the jet motion lane, consider checking to a different play or using a hot route to redirect blocking.

Pair this with Inside Zone or QB Zone from the same set so defenses have to respect both the jet sweep style handoff look and the touch pass, forcing linebackers to hesitate on flow reads.

Best used on first and second down or in a two minute drill to pick up quick, low risk yardage against defenses playing off coverage or showing blitz pressure.
