Escort Inside Zone Split is a run-first design out of Shotgun Wing Tight that pairs an inside zone blocking scheme with a lead escort element to seal the alley for the ball carrier. The offensive line and attached tight ends flow in unison, with the escort blocker peeling off to pick up the first second-level defender that shows in the running lane, giving you a true dual-read handoff. Your primary read starts at the frontside double team, then bounces to the backside cutback lane if the playside linebacker flows too hard, making this a legitimate zone beater against overaggressive fronts and gap-shooting defensive tackles.

Defensive Reads

Identify the box count pre-snap. Six or seven defenders in the box is the green light, eight or more means consider an audible to a quick pass in the set instead. Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap. If he crashes down immediately without reading, the cutback lane will open behind him for a big gain. Key the defensive tackle alignment on the play side. A 3-technique that shoots the gap hard can be sealed by the escort blocker, but a stunting or looping tackle can blow up the timing. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from depth are the biggest threat to this play, so if you see a user linebacker crashing the mesh point, be ready to cut it back immediately rather than trust the initial hole. This run struggles against gap-and-a-half or odd front defenses with a true nose lined up head up on the center, since it clogs the initial playside lane before the escort can get there.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs, especially first and ten or second and short, when you want to establish tempo and set up your play-action shots later in the set.

Check the defensive front pre-snap. If you see a 4-3 over or a bear front with the nose shaded to the play side, be ready to cut back rather than force it playside.

Use manual motion or a slight jab step with the stick to bait the linebackers into flowing hard, then plant and cut off the escort blocker once the alley opens.

Sequence this play with PA X Curl or Escort PA Slide later in the drive since both share the same backfield action and mesh point, forcing linebackers to freeze on the run fake.

Against defenses stacking the box with eight defenders, hot route the escort blocker to chip and release only if you need extra protection, but generally trust the blocking scheme as designed on early downs.

Avoid calling this into short yardage all-out blitz looks unless you have confirmed a light box, since the escort blocker cannot account for a free extra rusher.
