Ohio Spacing is a pure spacing concept out of Shotgun Wing Tight that floods the underneath zones with five short, quick-hitting routes designed to punish zone coverage. The backside receiver runs a vertical seam while the tight end works a shallow drag across the field, and on the strong side you get a hitch at the flat, a slant/nod from the slot, and a curl from the tight end aligned closest to the ball. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater with no run or play-action element, so the primary read progression starts with the curl to flat combo on the strong side before working back to the drag if the underneath zones are jumped.
Look for a two high safety shell presnap, since that often signals Cover 4 or Cover 2 where the underneath zone defenders have to widen and create natural throwing lanes for the curl and hitch. Watch the flat defender after the snap, if he sits on the hitch route the curl behind him is open, and if he widens to the curl the hitch is open, this is a hi lo read built into the play. Beware a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow drag lane or lurking in the intermediate zone, since spacing concepts are vulnerable to a defender who abandons his zone rules to jump the drag or curl. Cover 3 with a hard charging blitz off the edge can rush the quarterback before the spacing routes fully develop, so check protection or plan on a quick throw to the flat if you see extra rushers creeping to the line. Man coverage with no natural pick help can actually be tough on this concept since the routes are short and defenders can stay attached, so if you diagnose man presnap consider audibling to a play with more natural rub or crossing action instead.
Presnap, identify if the corners are playing off or bailing into deep thirds, since that tells you the curl and hitch will have room to sit down in the soft spots. Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, trust the curl to flat read on the strong side first because the flat defender cannot cover both the hitch and the curl at the same time. Hot route the backside vertical into a comeback or dig if you are facing a two high shell that rolls a safety down late, since the straight vertical loses value against soft Cover 4. This play excels on third and short to third and medium because the spacing concept naturally creates easy completions underneath the sticks. Pair Ohio Spacing with a play like PA X Curl or Sluggo Seam from the same Wing Tight formation to keep the defense honest, since if they start jumping the shallow routes with linebackers you can hit the seam or post over the top.
