Power O out of Shotgun Wing Pair is a gap scheme run play designed to pull a blocker across the formation and create a lead blocker through the hole for the running back. The diagram shows a tight offensive line with a wing attached to the formation, the lone receiver split out to the perimeter running a vertical release to occupy the deep defender, and the running back aligned in the backfield taking the handoff and reading the play side gap created by the pulling guard or fullback. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read is the running back's aiming point off the pulling blocker, keying whether to hit the designed gap downhill or bounce outside if the alley is sealed.
Pre-snap, identify the strong side linebacker depth and whether the defense has shifted the front toward the wing side, since that tells you if the play side gap will be crowded. Look for safety rotation down into the box which signals run blitz or an eight man front designed to beat gap schemes like this one. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and linebacker fits, if they crash hard down inside the pulling guard can be cut off and the running back should bounce outside. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole anticipating the pull, since a smart defender jumping the play side gap can blow up Power O before the puller arrives. Odd fronts with a nose shaded to the play side gap and quick flowing linebackers are the best defensive answer to this concept.
Run this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are not stacked in run blitz fronts. Check the box count before the snap and if the defense has six or more defenders stacked inside, consider audibling to an outside run or play action instead. Use the fullback or puller as your visual key and let the running back's vision follow the puller into the hole rather than pressing north south too early. Pair this play with Inside Zone and Duo from the same set so defenses cannot key on blocking direction, then mix in Read Option to punish overaggressive linebacker fills. Against light boxes with two high safeties, Power O hits hard downhill and forces the defense to declare run support late.
