FK Toss Verticals sells HB toss action to the flank before releasing into a four verticals passing concept out of Shotgun Wing Pair. Off the toss fake, three receivers push vertically up the field (including a wing back releasing from the flat area into a deep route) while the fourth receiver runs an out and up breaking to the corner, stretching the field horizontally and vertically. This is a play-action shot play built to beat Cover 2 and Cover 3 by overloading the deep zones, with the primary read starting on the boundary out and up route against soft corners before working to the seam verticals.
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which usually means Cover 2 and opens up the out and up route on the boundary against a corner playing underneath technique. A single high safety at deep middle depth signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, so key the flow of the underneath defenders to see if the seam verticals have a soft spot between the hook and deep third defenders. If linebackers sprint to sink into deep thirds or drop into zone immediately at the snap instead of stepping up for run fits, they have diagnosed the play-action and the shot play will be tightly covered. Watch for a user-controlled safety cheating toward the boundary route or the seam, since that lurk threat can jump the primary read and create a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. If the defense shows a blitz look with linebackers crashing downhill, the play-action fake can hold them just long enough for a big play, but only if the offensive line picks up any extra rushers in time.
Use this on early downs or in obvious run/PA situations to sell the toss fake and freeze linebackers and safeties who are keying run fits.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: two deep safeties sitting at depth signal Cover 2, which is where the out and up route wins over the top of an aggressive corner.
If you see a single high safety, hot route the shallow crosser or check into a quicker breaking route since the seams may get clogged by underneath zone defenders.
Pair this play with HB Toss or Mtn Inside Zone earlier in a series so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers, making this shot play far more effective later in the drive.
Take the deep shots only when you have a numbers or leverage advantage post-snap, and be ready to check down if the pass rush wins quickly since the deep routes take time to develop.
