Duo out of Shotgun Wing Pair lines up with 13 personnel, showing a wing TE and an offset HB in the backfield with the offensive line covered from tackle to tackle. This is a downhill gap run play built on double team blocks at the point of attack, with the offensive line stepping in unison to displace the front and climb to the second level. The primary read is the HB pressing the double team combo blocks and reading the first linebacker to fill, cutting off the double team on a hard downhill track rather than bouncing outside.
Duo is most effective against base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that do not stack extra defenders in the box, since the double team blocks need a numbers advantage to seal the interior. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: linebackers sitting shallow at five yards or closer are primed to fill fast and can blow up the play if your OL loses the double team reps. Post-snap, key the first second-level defender the double team climbs to, since that is the primary point of the cutback read for the HB. This run struggles against heavy blitz packages or nano blitzes that bring extra defenders through the A and B gaps before the double teams can climb, so if you see pressure indicators or a stacked box, check to a quick pass or hot route out of it. Defenses that spin down a safety into the box or show run blitz with linebackers crowding the line pre-snap will often stop Duo cold, so use pre-snap motion or an audible if you see that look.
Run Duo on early downs like first and second and ten when you want to establish a physical run identity and set up play-action later. Check the box count pre-snap and only trust the run if the defense shows six or fewer defenders in the box, since Duo relies on double teams winning at the point of attack rather than numbers advantage. Use manual control on the HB after the handoff to feel the double team push and pick the correct crease instead of dancing behind the line. Pair Duo with Read Option or Inside Zone from the same Wing Pair set so the defense cannot key on your run action, and follow it up with PA TE Attack or FK Toss Verticals to punish linebackers who crash down too fast. Against aggressive user defenders spying the A gap, stick with the interior double teams and trust the OL rather than trying to bounce it outside.
