Snag Spacing out of Shotgun Wing Pair features a Snag concept to the trips side with a corner route, a quick out/flat route, and an underneath snag route stacked underneath, while the backside receiver runs a deep dig to occupy the far side of the field. This is a classic Cover 3 and Cover 4 beater built to attack zone drops with layered spacing at three levels. The primary read progression starts with the corner route on top, works down to the snag/flag sitting in the honey hole, and checks the flat route as the outlet before working backside to the dig against zone leverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and cornerback alignment on the trips side, since a single high safety with cornerbacks playing off usually signals Cover 3 and invites the snag route conversion. Post-snap, key the flat defender's drop, since if he sinks too deep the flat route becomes an easy underneath completion for positive yardage. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the underneath flat-curl area, since that lurk threat can jump the snag route and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. Against Cover 4, read the outside cornerback's response to the corner route, since if he sticks with it the flat route opens up immediately underneath. If the defense shows a two-high shell that rotates late into man coverage, the backside dig becomes the answer since it works away from the trips congestion and clears any lurking underneath defenders.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the corner has outside leverage on the trips side, since that tells you whether the corner route or the flat route will be open first. Against Cover 3, work the snag route sitting in the flat-to-curl seam, since the corner defender is stressed vertically by the corner route. Against Cover 4, the flat route is often the fastest access throw because safeties are reading the deep routes and will not jump the shallow flat quickly. Use the backside dig as a hot route answer versus man coverage if you diagnose a blitz look, since it clears out underneath and stretches the zone horizontally. Pair this play with Four Verticals or FK Toss Verticals in the same set to keep defenses honest on third and medium, then come back to Snag Spacing when you see safeties creeping into shallow zones after being burned deep.
