Watch the flow of the linebackers after the snap since they are responsible for the underneath spacing windows, if they sink too deep the drag and out routes will be wide open. Man coverage with a defender chasing the motion across the formation is a tough matchup for this play since spacing concepts rely on soft zone voids rather than beating a defender in isolation. User controlled defenders who lurk in the shallow zone can jump the drag route so be ready to progress quickly to the out or corner route if you see that user threat sitting underneath. A well timed blitz that gets pressure before the routes develop can shut this play down since the quarterback needs a full beat to read through the levels.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you are likely seeing man coverage and should look to hot route the drag into a option route or slant. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 looks let the play develop naturally and read the shallow drag first since it settles right into the underneath zone void. Best called on second and medium or third and short since the quick game gets the ball out fast and picks up manageable yardage against soft zone drops.
