Fk Toss WR Screen out of Shotgun Wing Pair uses play-action toss fakes to the backfield while the outside receiver sells vertical release before working back to the flat as a bubble style screen. The offensive line shows a fake toss flow step to sell run action and pull perimeter blockers to the play side, creating a wall in front of the screen target. This is a screen pass built to bait aggressive run fits and man corners playing tight coverage, with the primary read being the screen receiver in the flat and the vertical release route as a hot read if the defense sniffs out the screen and drops a defender underneath.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with a corner playing off the screen side receiver, since that is the ideal shell for this concept to hit for big yardage. Watch linebacker depth and alignment, if they are stacked tight to the box expecting run action, they will bite on the toss fake and vacate the flat. Post-snap, key the flat or curl-flat zone defender on the play side, if they stay disciplined and sit in the throwing lane the screen is dead and the quarterback should look elsewhere. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or sitting in a lurk position near the screen, since a heads up user can jump the route and take it to the house. This play struggles against Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 quarters shells where the flat defender has outside leverage and safety help rotates down quickly.
Use this play when the defense has been keying on your inside zone and HB toss runs from this same Wing Pair set, since the toss fake sells hard and freezes linebackers. Look for blitz-heavy or man coverage pre-snap alignments, especially corners playing press or off man on the perimeter receiver, since they have no help getting off blocks in space. Avoid calling this against zone drop coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 where a flat defender sits right on top of the screen and can blow it up immediately. Pair this play with Mtn Inside Zone or Duo earlier in a drive to establish the run fake, then dial up this screen once linebackers start crashing downhill on run reads. If the flat defender jumps the screen immediately, consider hot routing the screen receiver vertical or checking to FK Toss Verticals on the next snap to punish overaggressive flat coverage.
