Breakdown

Mtn HB Trap out of Shotgun Wing Pair sends a receiver in motion pre-snap to shift defensive alignment before the ball is snapped, then hands off to the HB on a trap concept up the middle. The offensive line pulls a blocker across the formation to trap the first defender inside the tackle box while the rest of the line blocks down, creating a natural lane for the HB to press the point of attack. This is a power run play designed to punish overaggressive interior penetration and light boxes, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense. The primary read is the trap block: let the puller kick out the first threat off the ball, then read the flow of the linebackers to decide whether to hit it inside or bounce it outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a defender shadowing the motion man across the formation, which confirms man coverage and tells you the back seven is occupied outside the box. Key the first defender outside the guard on the play side, since he is the trap target and if he squeezes down hard the puller has an easy kick out block. Read linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers crashing downhill are a sign the defense expects run and will fill the trap lane fast, forcing the HB to bounce it outside. Look for a Mike linebacker or safety sitting in a lurk spot at the mesh point, since a disciplined defender reading the trap can blow it up before the puller arrives. Stacked fronts with both defensive tackles shaded inside the guards are the toughest matchup for this concept, while wide 4-3 under fronts with light interior spacing are the easiest to gash.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to bait the defense into showing man coverage or a blitz look before the snap, since a defender following the motion man tips man coverage and a linebacker crashing down tips run blitz.

Run this on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when the defense is stacking the box expecting a passing formation out of shotgun.

If the defense shows a heavy inside blitz look pre-snap, consider hot routing the wing tight end into a quick outlet rather than forcing the trap into a bad numbers situation.

Pair this with Mtn Inside Zone and Power O in the same play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.

Set up RPO Duo Alert Post later in the series once the defense starts cheating linebackers up to stop the trap, since the play-action window opens up big off the same look.
