RPO Alert Bubble is a run pass option out of Shotgun Trips TE Offset that pairs an inside zone hand off look with a bubble screen read to the slot receiver. The offensive line and TE execute zone blocking steps while the running back reads the leverage of the alerted defender, and the outside trips receiver runs a quick bubble route underneath while the point man releases vertically to occupy the corner. The primary read is the QB keying the flowing linebacker or slot defender: give the ball on the zone run if that defender crashes down, or pull and throw the bubble if he widens or blitzes.

Defensive Reads

Watch the slot defender or overhang linebacker at the snap, if he crashes hard to stop the run he opens the bubble throw, if he sits on the bubble receiver he opens the zone run lane. Man coverage on the outside trips receivers with no underneath help invites the bubble screen for consistent short yardage. A sim pressure or nano blitz off the edge can beat this if the offensive line can't get a clean zone track, so check protection depth before committing to the run read. Zone shells with a hard flowing linebacker to the trips side shut down the bubble since he can undercut the flat quickly, forcing the QB to trust the give on inside zone instead. Two high safety looks with soft cushion corners are the biggest green light for the bubble, since the defense is conceding the perimeter throw.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify the alert defender in the slot or the overhang linebacker since his run or pass leverage decides whether you hand off or throw the bubble. Use this against defenses that load the box with six or seven defenders since the bubble screen punishes aggressive run fits. If the defense shows two high safeties with soft corners, take the free bubble throw for a quick easy gain instead of forcing the run into a light box that's actually stacked underneath. Hot route the backside receiver on a quick out or slant if you see man coverage to give yourself an extra answer against a hard corner blitz. Sequence this with RPO Zone Alert Bubble or RPO Trap Alert Bubble later in a drive so linebackers hesitate on their run fits, opening up cutback lanes on the zone run portion. Best used on early downs or short yardage third downs where either the run or bubble conversion keeps the offense ahead of schedule.
