Read Option out of Shotgun Trio Offset is a true zone read run play built off 11 personnel. The QB reads the mesh point with the HB running an inside zone track while the QB stays patient behind the line, keying the read defender (typically the unblocked edge or DE) to decide between the give and the keep. The offensive line executes an inside zone blocking scheme, sealing running lanes to the play side while leaving the edge defender unblocked for the QB to read, making this a straightforward run-first play with no route concept attached in this diagram.
Pre-snap, identify the read defender, usually a defensive end or outside linebacker aligned on the edge, since this is the player the QB is reading. Check linebacker depth: if linebackers are stacked tight to the line in a run-blitz look, this play struggles to find room and you should consider bailing to a pass concept. Post-snap, watch whether the edge defender sits and reads the mesh instead of crashing, since a disciplined read defender who stays home takes away both the give and the keep. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is where this play thrives, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 3 looks with light boxes. Zone blitzes and heavy run fits with a spy on the QB shut this down fast, so avoid calling it into obvious run-blitz personnel or when the defense shows six plus in the box with safeties creeping down.
Use this play on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when you want to keep the defense honest and force the read defender to commit. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense is in a light box with 6 or fewer defenders, this is a green light to run it regardless of your read. Watch for the unblocked edge defender crashing down hard on the mesh point, since that tells you to pull the ball and get outside with the QB. Pair this play with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set to keep the defense guessing on run direction, then mix in Buck Sweep as a change of pace to attack the edge differently. Against aggressive user defenders who key the mesh point immediately, hold the ball longer than usual to freeze them before committing to a decision.
