Outside Zone out of Shotgun Trio Offset is a pure zone run play with the HB starting offset in the backfield and taking a lateral zone track behind the offensive line's playside flow. The line executes a zone blocking scheme, working combo blocks at the point of attack and climbing to the second level to seal linebackers as the play stretches horizontally before the back picks his crease. This is a run play designed to attack overplayed gaps and light boxes, with the primary read being the playside edge: the HB reads the flow of the offensive line and the defensive end/OLB leverage, bouncing outside if the edge is sealed or cutting back through the natural cutback lane if the defense overflows.
Watch linebacker depth and flow pre-snap, since Outside Zone is most effective when the second level is playing square or flowing hard downhill rather than staying patient. Identify if the defense is running a heavy edge set with a 4i or 5-technique defensive end, since a strong edge player can string the run out and force a cutback into a crowded box. Key the playside OLB or Sam linebacker's first step after the snap, if he crashes hard upfield the cutback lane opens immediately. This play struggles against gap-scheme run blitzes and stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box, so avoid calling it into a heavy blitz look or when the defense shows six-plus in the box pre-snap. User-controlled defenders flying downhill to fill the alley can blow this up, so scan for aggressive user movement at the snap before committing to the outside track.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this against light boxes of six or fewer defenders to avoid a numbers disadvantage. Use your left stick to press the playside zone track hard before making your cut, since bailing early kills the natural cutback lane this scheme is designed to create. Pair this with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same Trio Offset set so the defense cannot key run direction based on backfield action alone. Mix in Power O after a few reps of Outside Zone to punish linebackers who start flowing hard laterally in anticipation of the stretch action. Best called on early downs or short yardage when you want to control tempo and set up play-action shots like PA Post Shot later in the drive.
