RPO Zone Alert WR Screen lines up out of Shotgun Trio Offset with 11 personnel, showing an inside zone run action to the right paired with a bubble style screen to the left. The offensive line executes zone blocking steps to sell the run, while the outside receiver stalks and the inside slot receiver runs the WR screen route back toward the boundary for the quick throw option. This is an RPO built to attack overaggressive run fits, with the primary read being the flow of the second level defenders: pull it to throw the screen if linebackers crash downhill on the zone action, or hand it off if they stay wide or drop into coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker depth and shuffle at the snap, aggressive downhill triggers mean the screen is live and the ball is coming out fast. Key the flat defender or slot corner leverage, if they sit inside or bite on run action the WR screen has a clean lane to the sideline. User a linebacker or slot defender to sit in the throwing lane and jump the screen route, this is the single biggest counter to this RPO. Check safety rotation pre-snap, a two high shell that stays true usually signals zone coverage that lets linebackers fly downhill, which invites the screen pull. Disguise blitzes with the slot defender crashing the backfield can blow up both the run read and the screen throw simultaneously, so aggressive edge pressure from the perimeter is a strong counter.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to decide whether you are handing off or throwing the screen before the snap even happens.
If the defense shows a heavy box with linebackers creeping toward the line, key on pulling the ball for the WR screen immediately after the snap.
Against soft zone shells with linebackers sitting back, trust the zone run since the numbers favor the ground game.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set so the defense cannot key run versus RPO based on formation tendencies alone.
Mix in RPO Zone Alert Bubble as a companion call to keep defenders guessing on which perimeter route the RPO will hit, forcing them to respect both screen options equally.
