Breakdown
Verticals out of Shotgun Trio Offset sends four receivers vertically up the field, with the backside X running a deep fade up the sideline and three receivers releasing off the bunch alignment into a seam route, a skinny post, and an out breaking route into the boundary. The tight end runs a flat route to the opposite side, giving the quarterback a checkdown and clearing space underneath for the seam runner. This is a classic four verticals man and zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, with the primary read progressing from the seam route working to the post, then to the backside fade if the safety bites on the seam.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since verticals is built to exploit the seams in both Cover 2 and Cover 3. Watch for a deep half safety cheating toward the seam route, which opens the post route running behind him for an explosive gain. Key on the corner opposite the bunch, since if he presses at the line, the fade route can be beaten with a back shoulder throw before the safety arrives. If the defense shows Cover 4 or a shell with two deep safeties keeping outside leverage, expect the seam and post routes to be capped, so lean on the tight end flat route or check down quickly. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since a delayed throw to the seam or post into that area risks a jump throw interception.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap to confirm a two high or single high shell, since verticals punishes both if the corners are playing off man or shallow zone.
Use the seam route as your first read against Cover 3, since it splits the hook defender and the deep third safety in the natural void of the coverage.
Against Cover 2, look to the post route breaking behind the safety in the middle of the field before the safety can rotate over.
Hot route the tight end into a deeper option or keep him on the flat route as a checkdown against blitz heavy looks, since he is your outlet when the deep routes are covered.
Pair this play with Flanker Dig or Stick from the same set to keep the defense honest, since those plays hold linebackers and safeties short while Verticals attacks over the top on the next snap.
