Fake Screen Wheel is a play-action screen concept out of Shotgun Trio Offset that baits the defense into flowing toward a fake screen before releasing a receiver on a wheel route up the sideline. The diagram shows one route breaking outside and upfield into a fake screen look before cutting vertical (the red route), while the second receiver runs a clean vertical release straight up the seam (the yellow/olive route) as the true wheel. The primary read progression starts with the fake screen action to hold linebackers and underneath defenders, then works to the wheel route as the deep shot if the defense bites on the screen fake, making this a man beater designed to exploit aggressive run support and overzealous flow defenders.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, since this concept is most dangerous against single high looks where the deep half is stretched thin by the wheel route. Watch cornerback alignment on the wheel route release, tight man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest red flag that the wheel will win. Post-snap, key linebacker and nickel defender eyes, if they immediately flow toward the fake screen action and lose contain on the vertical release, the wheel route is live for a big play. Zone defenses that stay disciplined and sink underneath while maintaining deep thirds or quarters shells take away the wheel route and force a checkdown, this play struggles against Cover 3 sink or Cover 4 match zones. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking near the flat or sitting on the screen fake, a smart user can jump the underneath route and blow up the play before the wheel develops, so quarterback timing on the pump or fake motion matters.
Usage Tips
Look for linebackers or safeties that key on screen action pre-snap, since this play is built to punish defenders who crash downhill on perceived flare or bubble screens.
Use this on early downs or in second-and-short situations where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run or a quick screen, giving the wheel route room to work up the sideline.
Hot route the underneath receiver into a hitch or flat route if you diagnose zone coverage early, since the fake screen element loses value against disciplined zone drops that do not bite.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or RPO Zone Alert Bubble earlier in a series to condition the defense to jump screen action, then dial up Fake Screen Wheel to hit the wheel route for an explosive gain once they are conditioned.
