HB Draw out of Shotgun Trio Offset shows three receivers stacked to one side with a lone TE/receiver split opposite, and the HB aligned next to the QB in the backfield. At the snap the offensive line sets up in a pass-blocking look to sell the drop back before the interior linemen climb to the second level, letting the HB delay, take the handoff, and read the natural running lanes created by defenders flowing upfield on the pass rush. This is a pure run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush and blitz-heavy defenses, with the primary read progression starting at the mike linebacker's gap fill before working laterally to the first open crease.
Defensive Reads
Key the mike linebacker immediately after the snap, since his gap discipline determines whether he sits and reads or bites on the pass-blocking sell. Watch for a spy or delayed blitzer sitting in the box, as this is the primary counter that stops HB Draw cold by staying home instead of rushing upfield. Identify the defensive line's get-off, since a disciplined line that reads run keys quickly will collapse the pocket area before blockers reach the second level. Look at safety depth pre-snap, since a single-high shell with safeties staying deep leaves the box light and vulnerable to the delayed handoff hitting a wide-open lane. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers with defenders turning their backs to the backfield is a green light, since those cornerbacks cannot help in run support once they bite on route stems.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in obvious passing situations like second and long or third and medium when the defense is likely to bring pressure or drop into a pass-rush stance.
Check pre-snap for stacked boxes or blitz indicators such as linebackers creeping to the line, since the delayed handoff exploits defenders who commit upfield too fast.
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone defenses that stay patient at the snap, since spy linebackers or a sitting mike can blow up the play before the hole develops.
Pair this with Read Option and RPO Zone Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect the run threat from Trio Offset on every snap, keeping linebackers honest and slower to trigger.
Use HB Draw after showing Verticals or PA Post Shot out of the same formation to condition the defense to expect a drop back, then hit them with the delayed run when they jump the pass read.
