RPO Zone Alert Bubble is a run pass option out of Shotgun Trio Offset that pairs an inside zone run track with a bubble screen read to the slot receiver. The diagram shows the offensive line and TE blocking zone run flow while the running back takes a zone handoff path, and the outside receiver runs a bubble route behind a stalk-blocking receiver at the top. The QB reads the alley defender or slot flow: if the defender crashes toward the line to fill the run gap, pull and throw the bubble; if he sits or widens to cover the bubble, hand off the zone run.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap: shallow, tight linebackers signal they are ready to crash the run fit and leave the bubble open. Check slot corner or nickel alignment on the bubble side; if he is playing off with outside leverage, he is more likely to sit on the bubble and take away the pass option. Post-snap, key whether the alley defender attacks downhill through the line or shuffles out toward the bubble receiver to determine which side of the RPO is live. User-controlled defenders sitting in the shallow flat or spying the mesh point can jump both options if the QB pulls the ball late, so timing the pull is critical. Blitzes that send extra defenders off the edge on the bubble side can blow up both the run track and the RPO throw, so recognize overload pressure fronts before the snap.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing run fits inside or has extra flow to the bubble side before you commit to your post-snap read.
Key the alley defender or nearest slot linebacker: if he crashes downhill on the zone action, pull it and hit the bubble in space immediately.
Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to sell out on run support and leave the bubble uncovered.
Pair this with Outside Zone or Power O from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple run gaps, making your RPO key defender more predictable.
If a defense consistently jumps the bubble read, sequence in Read Option or HB Draw from Trio Offset to punish overaggressive flow to that side.
