Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trio Offset is a straightforward zone run play with the HB aligned offset to the QB and an in-line TE tight to the formation. The offensive line blocks a zone scheme, flowing laterally to create a natural running lane based on the flow of the defensive front, with the TE working a combo block at the point of attack. This is a run play only, no play-action or RPO look attached, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback lane first, then the frontside gap if the backside is clogged by pursuit.
Defensive Reads
Watch for light boxes (6 or fewer defenders) pre-snap, which signal Inside Zone should hit for solid yardage against base fronts. Key the play side linebacker depth: if he is stacked shallow expecting run, be ready to jump the frontside gap and blow up the zone flow before it develops. Identify Mike linebacker fills quickly since a fast-flowing Mike linebacker can erase the cutback lane that this play relies on as its primary read. Look for a user-controlled defender spying the backside cutback lane, since smart human defenders will sit on this exact read against Trio Offset run calls. Stacked boxes with an extra safety or slot defender crashing down shut this run down completely, forcing the offense into predictable RPO or draw counters from the same set.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive front pre-snap for the number of down linemen and linebacker depth to identify which gap will be softest before the snap.
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls in this set.
Pair Inside Zone with Outside Zone and HB Draw from Trio Offset to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction and force them to play more honest run fits.
If the defense stacks the box with 8 or more defenders, bail out to RPO Zone Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert WR Screen from the same set to punish overcommitment.
User the fullback or TE blocker briefly at the snap to seal the edge defender before releasing control back to the ball carrier for the cutback read.
