Breakdown

Stick N Nod is a Stick concept variant out of Shotgun Trey Y Iso that combines quick-hitting stick routes with a nod (hitch and settle) route to attack underneath zone drops and man leverage. The Trey bunch look to one side creates natural rub potential against man coverage while the isolated receiver runs the nod route as a built-in hot read against soft cushion corners. This is a pass play designed to get the ball out in under two seconds, with the primary read progressing from the stick route in the flat to the nod route breaking underneath, and finally to the running back check down if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If linebackers sink hard to take away the stick route in the flat, the nod route sitting down behind them becomes wide open against zone. Key the corner over the isolated receiver post-snap. A corner playing off man will bite on the nod route hesitation move, so look for him to overcommit and create separation for a quick throw. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes where a linebacker is spying or blitzing through the underneath passing lanes, since the quick game routes have no time to develop before pressure arrives. Cover 3 zone shells with a hard flat defender sitting on the stick concept can take away the quick flat throw, forcing the quarterback to trust the nod route sitting in the soft spot behind the underneath zone. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the nod route if the quarterback stares it down too long, so use eye manipulation and look off the safety before delivering the throw.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short or second and medium when you need a high percentage completion against zone or man coverage without exposing your quarterback to a long developing play.

Identify the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth. If both safeties are deep at 10 plus yards, you are likely seeing a zone shell and the stick route sitting down in the flat becomes the primary target.

If the corner over the isolated receiver is playing tight man with no safety help over the top, hot route the nod route into a speed out or slant to create instant separation before the corner can jump the route.

Pair this play with Stick from the same set to keep defenders guessing since both plays share route concepts but attack different leverage points, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Use motion pre-snap on the running back to check for man coverage. If a linebacker or safety follows the motion, you know you are getting man and can key the nod route rocking the corner off his landmark.
