PA Slot Under is a play-action pass out of the Shotgun Trey Y Iso formation designed to punish linebackers and safeties for biting on the run fake. The play uses an underneath crossing route from the slot combined with an over-the-middle developing shot concept, giving the quarterback a horizontal stretch read against zone and a natural pick element against man coverage. Primary progression starts with the deep shot off the play fake, then works down to the slot under route as the checkdown, with the QB reading the flow of the linebackers to decide whether to hit the intermediate window or dump it underneath.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since single high alignments are more susceptible to the play fake holding linebackers in the box. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they step up hard on the run fake, the underneath crossing route will have a wide open throwing lane. Post-snap, key any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, since he can jump the under route if the play fake does not sell. Cover 3 with aggressive underneath zone drops is the toughest shell to attack here, since the extra defender in the middle of the field can rob the crossing route. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is where this play excels, since the play fake and route combination naturally creates separation on linebackers and slower defenders.
Run this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when you have already established the run game from this formation so the fake actually holds linebackers.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, expect the linebackers to be more run conscious, which opens up the under route faster.
Use hot routes to convert the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, giving you a rhythm throw if the play fake gets picked up quickly.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set so defenders start keying run fits, then hit them with PA Slot Under once they start crashing downhill on early down tendencies.
Sequence this after Stick or Stick N Nod to condition linebackers to sit in short zones, then use the play fake here to freeze them and create a bigger throwing window underneath.
