Four Verticals out of Trey Y Iso sends four receivers vertically up the seams and numbers to stretch the defense from sideline to sideline, with the backfield RB releasing on a check release or shallow option route underneath for a hot outlet. This is a pure man beater and Cover 2 beater, attacking the deep middle void between the safeties and isolating linebackers on slower TEs or RBs in man coverage, while also serving as a Cover 3 beater by overloading the single deep safety with four vertical stems he cannot cover alone. The primary read progression starts at the seam receivers (looking for the safety to widen or bite on a route), then works to the middle read (often the Y Iso TE working the honey hole against Cover 3), and finally to the outside verticals if the middle is capped.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and width since two safeties splitting wide and deep signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which telegraphs the deep middle throwing lane. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow linebackers who do not sink with the seam routes get exploited immediately by the middle read. If you see a single high safety rotate late or a robber drop into the intermediate middle, expect a Cover 3 or Cover 1 look that puts extra pressure on the QB to find the open seam quickly. User the deep middle defender if you are on defense, since sitting a user controlled safety in the honey hole is the number one way to shut this concept down. Watch for disguised zone blitzes, since a five or six man pressure with only three deep defenders can bait the offense into a bad throw if the QB does not recognize the rush pre-snap.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment before the snap since this route concept plays completely differently against each shell.
Against Cover 2, target the deep middle seam route between the two safeties since that is the natural void in the coverage.
Against Cover 3, key the middle read TE working the honey hole behind the linebackers and in front of the single high safety for an explosive gain.
Use motion or a hot route on the RB to check him into a route versus a blitz look, since four verticals leaves you thin in protection against extra rushers.
Pair this play with Stick or Curls Y-fade earlier in a series to bait linebackers and safeties into sitting shallow, then hit Four Verticals for the home run shot once the defense overplays underneath.
Best called on early downs or in two minute situations when you want an explosive play opportunity rather than a conversion, since it is a low percentage but high reward call versus soft zones.
