Saints HB Angle out of Shotgun Trey Y Iso is a quick-game man beater built around the running back angle route out of the backfield, paired with an isolated Y (TE) release and outside receiver verticals to hold the safeties. The HB releases into the angle route, breaking outside then working back inside across the face of a linebacker or nickel defender, exploiting any man coverage matchup in space. Primary read progression starts with the angle route against man leverage, then works to the isolated Y route on the backside if a linebacker sits on the angle break, with the deep shots serving as a checkdown-beater against overplayed underneath coverage.
Check the depth and alignment of the linebacker or nickel defender lined up over or near the running back before the snap, tight alignment usually signals man coverage responsibility. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flowing hard to the angle route, which signals a lurk read and means you should reset to the isolated Y route or backside option. Zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers sitting in short zones can clog the angle route's inside break, so be ready to climb the progression to the Y iso or verticals. Man coverage looks like Cover 1 or Cover 0 with a linebacker matched on the HB are the easiest reads to exploit, since the angle route creates natural separation against man leverage in space. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge or A-gap since the HB releasing into his route pulls away from blocking duties, leaving the quarterback exposed if the protection call is not adjusted.
Use this play on early downs or in third and short situations where linebackers are more likely to be in man coverage on the HB out of the backfield.
Motion the HB or check the pre-snap alignment of the closest linebacker or nickel defender to confirm man responsibility before the snap.
If you see a linebacker sitting tight in the box with no clear man leverage, hot route the angle route to a quick option or slant to avoid a jump-throw interception.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and HB Draw from the same set so defenses respect the run threat and bite on linebacker flow, opening up the angle route even more.
