Sail Sluggo is a classic sail concept paired with a sluggo (slant and go) route from the Trey Y Iso set in Shotgun 11 personnel. The sluggo route attacks the deep third or the corner in Cover 2, while the underneath sail combo (flat and intermediate out) stretches the defense horizontally to hold linebackers and underneath zone defenders. This is a pass play designed as both a Cover 2 beater and Cover 3 beater with strong man beating traits, and the primary read progression starts with the sluggo route against single high or press man, then works down to the sail combo underneath if the deep shot is not there.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two high or single high safeties, since Cover 2 shells with a hard flat defender leave the sluggo vulnerable to the corner route over the top. Watch the cornerback depth at the snap, if he sinks or plays soft off the line, the slant fake on the sluggo will not sell and the route becomes an easy user pick for a lurking safety. Key the middle linebacker drop, in Cover 3 the sail combo underneath will pull the flat defender wide, so a fast linebacker drop into the intermediate window can undercut the sail route before it develops. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells where the deep half safety has outside leverage to jump the sluggo route, and it can be exposed by disguised zone blitzes that bring pressure from the slot while dropping a linebacker into the sluggo passing lane. If the user controls the deep safety and stays patient instead of biting on the slant fake, the sluggo becomes a low percentage throw and you should reset to the sail combo underneath.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties cheating deep, the sluggo route is designed to freeze the corner on the slant fake before breaking vertically past him. Against man coverage, use the sluggo as your first read since the double move creates natural separation versus press or trail technique. If the corner sits on the sluggo and the underneath zone is soft, work the sail combo flat route as a quick outlet to move the chains on third and short. Pair this play with Four Verticals or Deep Post from the same set to keep the defense guessing on shot plays, then mix in Stick or Stick N Nod to punish defenses that start cheating deep after the sluggo hits a few times. Use this on early downs or second and medium when you want to test single high shells without fully committing to a max protect shot play.
