Quick Reference

Breakdown

Cowboys Read Dig is a dig-based passing concept out of Shotgun Trey Y Iso that attacks the middle of the field with a horizontal stretch. The Y receiver runs an isolated route to the backside while the Trey bunch side works a dig and underneath combo to create a natural rub against man coverage and a soft spot against zone. This is a man beater first, with the dig sitting down in the hole against zone as a secondary answer, and the primary read progression starts with the isolated Y route before working back to the dig sitting in the middle.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows single high safety look, since that isolates the Y receiver on an island and tells you the offense will likely target that side first. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sinks too fast into the dig window, that confirms zone coverage and the dig will be the answer. Man up the isolated Y receiver with your best cover corner and stay aware of any user lurk in the shallow middle, since a spy sitting in the dig lane can jump the route if the quarterback holds it too long. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender to the Trey side can compress the dig throwing window, so bait the quarterback into a late throw with a delayed drop from the middle linebacker. Bring a nano blitz off the edge opposite the iso side to force a quick decision, since pressure disrupts the timing needed for the dig to fully develop.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap alignment on the isolated Y receiver first, if you see a single high safety shaded away from that side, throw the iso route immediately before the dig even develops.

Against man coverage with no safety help over the top, the iso route wins quickly on a step, so get the ball out on time rather than waiting on the dig to break.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, let the dig sit down in the void between the underneath linebackers and the deep safeties before pulling the trigger.

Pair this play with Stick or Stick N Nod earlier in a series to condition linebackers to sink under quick routes, then hit the dig behind them once they start jumping short routes.

Use this on second and medium or third and medium situations where the defense is likely to sit in zone, since the dig has enough width to move the sticks if the underneath defenders overcommit.
