Deep Post out of Shotgun Trey Y Iso is a man beater built around a deep post from the isolated Y (TE) or outside receiver, designed to attack single high safety looks and off man coverage. The concept clears the underside with shorter breaking routes to occupy linebackers and shallow zone defenders, opening a throwing lane for the deep post over the middle of the field. Blocking is a standard five man protection with the back releasing late or checking the edge, and the primary read is the deep post first, working down to any breaking route underneath if the post is capped by a deep safety.
Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, single high is the green light for this play while two high should push you to a check or hot route. Watch cornerback depth and technique, soft press or off man corners give the post room to separate, while tight press corners can disrupt the route timing and force an early or contested throw. Post snap, key the middle linebacker or any user controlled defender dropping into a deep middle lurk, this is the primary threat that can jump the post route and create a turnover. Look for late rotating safeties in disguised Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, if the deep safety rotates late toward the post side, the throwing window closes fast and you should check down to the underneath route. Recognize blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since this concept relies on a full protection count, a well timed blitz can collapse the pocket before the post route fully develops downfield.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, this play thrives against single high shells like Cover 1 and Cover 3 where there is no second deep defender to help over the top on the post.
If you see two deep safeties pre snap in Cover 2 or Cover 4, consider hot routing the post to a shallow cross or audibling to Four Verticals from this same set to stress the numbers instead.
Use this on early downs or in second and medium situations when defenses are more likely to sit in base zone shells, since a jump on the snap from an aggressive blitz can disrupt the timing of the deep route.
Pair Deep Post with Stick or Stick N Nod earlier in a series to bait defenders into sitting on shorter routes, then come back to Deep Post once the defense shows they are keying the underneath game.
Manually control the receiver running the post after the catch point read to high point the ball or box out a trailing corner in man coverage, this is critical against physical press corners.
