Quick Reference

Breakdown

Trail Shake is a man beater out of Shotgun Trey Y Iso that uses the isolated Y receiver on a trail/shake combo to create separation against tight man coverage. The Y receiver works a shake route (in and out breaks stacked together) designed to shake off a trailing defender, while the trips side runs a combination of routes to occupy underneath and deep zone defenders and clear space. The primary read progression starts with the isolated Y on the shake route, then works to the trips side for a secondary option if the linebacker or safety jumps the initial break.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the isolated Y receiver's corner: if he is playing tight man technique with no deep safety rotating to his side, expect the shake route to win against man coverage. Post-snap, watch the flow of the middle linebacker: if he sinks hard to the shake route instead of respecting the trips concept, that confirms man coverage and you should trust the primary read. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, the trips side underneath defenders will often sit and clog the shallow zones, so be ready to work the deeper route in the trips concept instead of the isolated shake. Watch for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow middle zone, since a shake route breaking inside can run directly into a spying linebacker or robber safety if the defense disguises a zone look as man pre-snap. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge or through the A-gap will compress your time to throw, so identify overload blitz alignments before the snap and be ready to get the ball out on the shake route quickly rather than holding for the trips concept to develop.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as a corner lined up tight over the isolated Y with no safety help rotating over the top before snapping this play.

If you see two high safeties holding depth, expect zone drops from the trips side and be ready to climb the ladder to your checkdown or trips concept instead of forcing the shake route.

Hot route the backside or trips receiver into a quick out or speed out if you diagnose a blitz look, giving yourself a quicker outlet against pressure.

Pair this play with Stick or Stick N Nod from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick isolation reads and trips-based combinations, forcing linebackers to widen their drops.

This play shines on third and medium or third and long against man coverage teams since the shake action creates natural separation late in the route, so save it for money downs when you have identified man tendencies from your opponent.
