Flood Sit is a three-level flood concept to the trips side out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex Str, paired with a deep dig from the backside receiver crossing the field. The outside receiver runs a corner route to clear the top, the slot runs a quick out that sits underneath, and the third trips receiver releases inside then curls back to sit in the sit route as the shallow flood piece, while the backside X clears across the field on a deep crossing route. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, since it stretches one side vertically, intermediate, and short, forcing a single deep third defender to choose while the sit route settles into the vacated zone. Primary progression is corner to sit to backside dig, reading the flat and curl defenders to decide between the sit route and the deep crosser.
Defensive Reads
Identify single-high safety shells pre-snap since Cover 3 is the primary weakness this play exploits, especially if the corner is playing off coverage and can be flooded vertically. Watch the flat or curl defender post-snap: if he widens with the corner route, the sit route sits wide open underneath him for an easy completion. If the defense shows Cover 1 or man coverage, key the underneath linebacker or nickel defending the sit route, since a lurking user defender can jump this route and bait a turnover. Against Cover 4 or two-high safety looks, the corner route may get taken away, so shift focus to the backside deep crosser working away from help. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge can disrupt this timing based concept quickly, so respect the ball before the sit route settles if the offensive line shows a protection weakness.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: two deep safeties can still get flooded if the corner sinks late, but the sit route is your best answer versus single-high Cover 3 or Cover 1 zone drops. If the corner defender jumps the sit route route, immediately look to the corner route breaking behind him for an explosive gain. Use hot routes to adjust the backside crosser into a deeper dig or drag if you need a quicker outlet versus aggressive blitz looks. This play works best on second and medium to third and short since the sit route gives you a high floor conversion while the corner route provides a home run shot. Sequence this with RPO Peek Slant or Mtn Stick earlier in a series to get defenders sitting on shorter routes, then hit them with the corner shot off the flood look. Pairing with PA Cross Sit or Dagger Sit from the same personnel keeps the defense guessing between play action and this quick-hitting flood concept.
