Breakdown

Mtn Stick is run from Shotgun Trey Y-Flex Str with 11 personnel and features pre-snap motion to help declare the coverage shell before the snap. Off the diagram, the backside receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers while the outside receiver breaks into a flat/out route, giving the offense a high-low read on that side. On the play side, the slot runs a corner route up top while the outside receiver settles into a stick route at intermediate depth, with a check release back releasing to the flat as the underneath outlet. This is a classic Stick concept build, a man and zone beater that stresses the flat defender and shallow zone with three-level spacing, and the primary progression starts with the stick route in the middle, then works to the corner route or flat depending on the leverage of the underneath defender.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, watch the safety alignment, if you see two high safeties sitting deep it usually signals zone coverage and the stick route should be your first read. Check cornerback depth on the play side, a soft corner playing off the line suggests he will sink into a zone drop and the stick or flat route will be open underneath. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker responsible for the flat, if he widens with the check release back it opens a throwing lane for the stick route behind him. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking near the stick route depth, since that is the most common way defenses take this concept away. This play struggles against tight man coverage with underneath help or against Cover 3 with disciplined curl to flat defenders, since both can clog the stick window and force the quarterback into a checkdown.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can lean toward the corner route or the deep vertical for a big play. Against zone shells, work the stick route first since it settles into the void between the underneath linebackers and the deep zone defenders. This play pairs well with Mtn Fade Smash and Mtn Verticals in the same set, since all three attack similar zones but stress different levels, making it easy to keep the defense guessing with consistent pre-snap looks. Use this on third and short to medium distance since the stick route sits right at the sticks and gives a high percentage completion with YAC potential. If you see the defense loading the box or showing blitz indicators, hot route the check release back to a quick flat or slide protection to buy the quarterback more time against pressure.
