Jet Chip Wasp out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex Str is a classic Air Raid vertical shot play built around a wheel and go combo on the boundary and a deep out breaking route to the flat. The yellow route from the outside receiver chips and releases vertically before breaking outside on a corner route, the red route runs a deep post/dig crossing pattern from the slot, and the blue route from the backfield runs a wheel out to the flat while the far outside receiver runs a comeback breaking route back toward the sideline. This is a man beater designed to stress deep third defenders with the double vertical stem, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route breaking outside, moves to the crossing route working inside, and checks down to the wheel route out of the backfield if the deep routes are covered.

Defensive Reads

Key the middle linebacker and safety rotation at the snap, if they crash toward the run action or bite on play action flow the wheel route out of the backfield will be wide open. Watch for cornerback press alignment on the outside receivers, press man coverage on the corner route is vulnerable since the receiver can stack the defender vertically before breaking. Identify two high safety shells since this forces the quarterback to hold the ball longer, giving the pass rush time to disrupt the deep progression. User the underneath zone defender or lurking linebacker to jump the crossing red route, this is the most common user pick point defenders make against this concept. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can beat this play before routes develop, since Jet Chip Wasp needs time and a clean pocket to hit the deep shots.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the double vertical stems on the yellow and red routes create natural conflict for one deep defender.

Use motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone coverage, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are likely facing man coverage and can attack the wheel route matchup.

Hot route the crossing red route into a deeper dig if you see zone drops sitting underneath, this manipulates linebackers away from the wheel route lane.

Best called on second and long or third and medium to long since it takes time to develop and needs a clean pocket for the deep shots to hit.

Pair this with Mtn Verticals or PA Verts earlier in a series to condition the defense to respect vertical stems, then dial up Jet Chip Wasp to hit the wheel route for a big gain when safeties bite on run action.
