RPO Read FL Screen out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex Str is a run pass option built around a bubble style screen to the flanker aligned outside the trey bunch look. The diagram shows the flanker releasing outside then breaking upfield after a quick out and up path while the offensive line stays in to handle the run fake underneath and the two receivers to the trio side crack down as blockers on the perimeter. This is a screen focused RPO designed to attack overaggressive run fits and zone defenders who bite on the run action, with the primary read being the flanker screen first and the give to the running back as the backside option if defenders sit on the screen.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage on the flanker with no help underneath is a green light to throw the screen since the crack blocks remove the leverage defender. If the play side cornerback is sitting flat footed at the snap or reading the quarterback's eyes, that is a sign of a lurk defender jumping the screen, which should push you toward the inside run instead. Zone shells with linebackers flowing hard to the run action create the biggest window for the screen, since the flow opens the alley outside. Overloaded run blitzes with extra defenders in the box are exactly what this RPO is designed to beat, pull the ball immediately in those looks. Disciplined zone defenses that keep a linebacker or safety spying the flanker screen while maintaining run fits will shut this play down, in that case take the give and stay patient.
Usage Tips
Presnap identify if the defense is showing a run blitz or aggressive box count, since that tells you to pull the ball and throw the screen immediately.
Watch the flanker side cornerback depth, if he is playing soft or bailing off the snap the screen has room to develop behind the crack blocks.
Use the RPO key read indicator to decide between handing off on the zone run and pulling for the screen, do not lock your eyes to one side presnap.

Best used on early downs or in run heavy personnel counts where linebackers are quick to flow toward the line, since that opens the screen lane.
