Breakdown

Mtn Fade Smash out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex Str is a smash concept pass play built to attack Cover 2 and other split safety shells. The outside receiver runs a fade to occupy the corner and safety deep, the slot receiver behind him runs a short corner route to sit underneath in the flat, and the third receiver bends a deep in/dig route across the middle of the field while the flexed TE releases vertically up the seam. There is no motion shown pre-snap in the diagram, and the backfield stays home to protect, confirming this is a straight dropback pass rather than an RPO or play-action shot. Primary read progression is fade to corner route (the actual smash combo) on the numbers side, working backside to the deep crosser if the safety jumps the flat or the corner sits on the fade.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are showing deep halves that is the green light for this smash concept. Post-snap, watch the flat defender or corner, if he sinks with the corner route the fade window opens outside, if he jumps the fade the underneath corner route is open. Beware of a user-controlled safety who can sit in the flat/corner passing window and undercut the short route, this is the main threat against this concept. Against man coverage look immediately to the deep crossing route since it exploits natural picks and rubs against man defenders trailing across the field. Cover 3 with a hard robber underneath can take away both the fade and corner routes, forcing the quarterback to check down or scramble.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high shell before the snap because this concept is designed to punish Cover 2 specifically.

If the corner sits on the short route and the safety rolls down late, take the fade shot on a back shoulder throw for a chunk gain.

Use the deep crossing route as your answer against Cover 3 or man coverage since it clears underneath zones and creates natural separation versus trailing defenders.

Pair this play with Mtn Verticals or PA Verts in your play-calling sequence so defenders start respecting the vertical shell, opening up the smash window underneath on later downs.

Best called on second and medium to third and long when defenses are more likely to sit in Cover 2 shells to prevent explosive plays.
