0 1 Trap is a shotgun trap run out of Spread Slots Close with 10 personnel, using four wide receivers spread across the formation to pull defenders out of the box before the snap. The HB takes a quick lateral step and cuts upfield behind a trap block from the interior line, with the guard pulling to kick out the first threat off the edge of the play side gap. This is a power run play designed to hit a soft interior gap fast, and the primary read progression starts with the trap block for the running back: press the mesh point, read the pulling guard's kick block, then explode through the crease he creates.
Look for the defensive tackle's first step after the snap, since a hard upfield charge is exactly what the trap block is designed to exploit and creates the biggest crease. Watch linebacker depth before the snap: stacked or downhill linebackers who read run quickly can beat the trap block's timing and close the crease before the back gets there. This run struggles against gap exchange or scrape exchange defensive fronts, since those techniques replace the trapped lineman's gap with a second defender flowing in behind him. Man coverage on the perimeter with light numbers in the box is the ideal shell to attack, while a stacked eight man front or a defense keying a spy on the HB tends to shut this run down before it develops. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's flow: if he stays home and does not overrun the play, the crease narrows and the back has to cut it back immediately behind the trap block.
Call this play when the defense is showing a light box, since the four wide receiver spread in 10 personnel forces defenses out of base fronts and into nickel or dime looks with fewer run defenders. Check pre-snap for the alignment of the defensive tackle over the play side guard, since this play is designed to trap that first down lineman and needs a clean angle to work. Use hot routes to send the backside slot on a quick option route if you see man coverage, giving you a checkrelease outlet if the trap gets blown up. Pair this play with RNS 60 Z Read or Inside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes out of the identical shotgun alignment, keeping linebackers guessing on run fits. Best used on early downs (first and ten or second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action shots later in the drive.
