Zone Alert Bubble is an RPO out of Pistol Weak Slot Open that gives the QB a run/pass conflict read tied to the box count. The diagram shows the HB running an inside zone track that bends outside behind the line while the near slot receiver releases on a quick bubble screen, with the outside receiver working a slant to occupy the corner and clear space underneath. The primary read is pre-snap and post-snap box count: if the defense stacks the box or the alley defender crashes down on the run fake, pull and throw the bubble to the slot receiver for numbers in space, otherwise hand off the zone run.
Watch the alley defender or slot corner pre-snap, if they are aligned tight to the line expecting run support the bubble read opens up immediately. Post-snap, key the flat defender's first step, if he crashes toward the line of scrimmage on the run fake the bubble throw is wide open. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with the corner sitting deep tend to leave the bubble flat vulnerable since the underneath defender has to respect both run and screen. Man coverage with an aggressive slot corner jumping the bubble route can be beaten by converting to the slant, so the outside receiver becomes the answer. A disciplined defense that keeps the alley player square and reads the RPO mesh point can force the QB into the handoff, especially if extra defenders are stacked in the box pre-snap.
Count the box before the snap and let that number dictate your decision instead of guessing after the snap.
If the slot cornerback or nickel is sitting on the bubble alert with outside leverage, keep the ball on the zone run since the numbers are not there.
Use the slant from the outside receiver as a hot route conversion versus man coverage when the flat defender jumps the bubble.
Pair this play with HB Stretch and Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so defenders start keying run fits, then hit them with the bubble RPO when they overcommit to the box.
This is a great call on early downs or short yardage third downs since the built in conflict punishes both aggressive run blitzes and passive zone drops.
