HB Draw out of Pistol Weak Slot Open shows two vertical takeoff routes on the outside to hold the corners and safeties deep while the interior blocking sets up a delayed handoff to the HB. The offensive line shows pass protection at the snap before the backfield action flows into a draw, letting the defensive front crash upfield past the point of attack. This is a pure run play designed to bait aggressive pass rush lanes and blitzers, not a play-action or RPO look, with the primary read being the initial hole created by the line's pass-set drift before the HB decides whether to cut inside or bounce it based on linebacker flow.
Key the defensive line's first two steps: if they are selling hard upfield off the snap, that is the tell for a delayed run rather than true pass protection. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who are already creeping toward the line of scrimmage will overrun the draw and open cutback lanes. Spy the HB with a linebacker or use manual defender control on an interior defender to sit and read the mesh point instead of flowing with the initial line movement. Zone shells with a Mike linebacker spying the backfield shut this down quickly since the draw relies on the front seven vacating the middle. Man coverage on the outside routes with no underneath spy is the most vulnerable shell, since all four second level defenders can be pulled out of the box by the vertical release fakes.
Call this on early downs or after showing multiple drop back pass plays from this same formation so the defense keys pass protection and bites on the draw fake.
Use it heavily against defenses that bring pressure packages or nano blitzes since the delayed handoff exploits overaggressive defensive linemen shooting gaps.
Pair it in a sequence with PA Boot Slide or PA Short Post from the same set so linebackers stay conflicted between run fits and pass drops.
Watch the Mike linebacker pre snap: if he is creeping toward the line expecting a blitz, this is a green light call.
Avoid calling this against disciplined zone defenses that spy the backfield or against user controlled defenders sitting in the box, since they can read the mesh point too quickly.
