PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Weak Slot Open that pulls the quarterback to the boot side while the offensive line slides protection with him. The diagram shows a deep vertical route up the numbers that breaks outward late, a corner route from the inside slot working to the boundary sideline, and a slide route underneath from the backfield that drags flat across the formation as the checkdown or scramble outlet. The primary read progression starts with the corner route as the man beater against off coverage, moves to the vertical/comeback breaking route for a zone window, and finishes with the underneath slide as the outlet if both are covered or the pocket collapses.
Watch for a single high safety pre-snap, which tells you the deep vertical route has a favorable one-on-one matchup on the boot side. If the cornerback aligned over the outside receiver bails into a deep zone drop at the snap, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 and look to hit the corner route sitting in the intermediate window. Key the flow of the linebackers after the play fake. If they bite hard on the run action, the underneath slide route will be wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Beware of a user-controlled defender spying the quarterback on the boot side, since aggressive edge blitzes or contain defenders can disrupt the rollout timing and force an early, inaccurate throw. Against Cover 2 shells, the corner route can get squeezed by an underneath zone defender jumping the route, so be ready to reset to the vertical breaking route or the slide checkdown.
Run this on early downs or 2nd and short to sell the run fake convincingly since the boot action only works if the defense respects the play fake.
Check the strong safety and cornerback depth pre-snap. If you see two deep safeties rolled to the boot side, prioritize the underneath slide route instead of forcing the corner throw into a deep half.
Use the rollout to your advantage by manually stepping up in the pocket if the edge defender crashes hard, since the sliding protection buys extra time away from the play side rush.
Hot route the slide receiver into a flat sit route against zone shells that flood the boot side with linebackers, giving you a quicker outlet read.
Pair this with Zone Fake Jet or HB Stretch from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits before hitting them with the boot action later in a series.
