HB Dive out of Pistol Weak Slot Open is a straight downhill run play that sends the running back through the A gap immediately off the snap. The offensive line uses a standard base blocking scheme designed to create a vertical crease between the guards and center, with no pulling linemen shown in the diagram. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element attached, and the primary read progression is the RB reading the center and guard double team leverage to decide whether to press the direct gap or bounce slightly off the fullback's block path.
Key the middle linebacker depth before the snap, since a linebacker sitting too far off the line gives the dive extra room to develop before contact. Watch for a bunched defensive front with both defensive tackles shaded toward the A gaps, which clogs the dive lane and forces a negative or minimal gain. User the middle linebacker and attack downhill immediately at the snap rather than reading the play, since dive plays punish delayed pursuit. Look for run blitzes or A gap blitzes shown by linebackers creeping up pre-snap, as these defeat the play design by beating the blockers to the point of attack. Zone coverage shells with safeties staying deep tend to leave the box light, so a two high safety look with a standard four man front is the most vulnerable shell against this concept.
Use HB Dive on early downs in short yardage or when you need a quick positive gain to stay ahead of the sticks. Check the defensive front pre-snap: if the defense shows a light box with fewer than six defenders inside the tackles, this play hits fast before linebackers can flow. Pair HB Dive with HB Stretch and HB Draw in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on run direction, since all three attack different lanes at different tempos. Avoid calling this against stacked fronts or heavy blitz looks where extra defenders are crashing the interior gaps immediately. Mix in Zone Alert Smoke or Counter Alert Smoke as pre-snap audibles if you see the defense overloading the box, since those give you a bailout option without changing personnel.
