Breakdown

Inside Zone Split is a base zone run out of Pistol Weak Slot Open with 20 personnel on the field. The offensive line steps in unison to the play side while the HB reads the initial double team and mesh point before deciding to bend the run inside the tackle box or press it wider based on the flow of the front. This is a pure run play designed to attack the interior gaps, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside gap first, then cutback lane if the frontside is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow and square they are reading run fits and will flow hard to the play call. Identify whether the defensive front is a 4-3 over or under look, since Inside Zone Split gets sealed easier against gap heavy fronts with disciplined edge defenders. Key the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the box signals run support that can beat this play with an extra hat in the gap. Post-snap, user the playside linebacker or a lurking defender to fill the cutback lane immediately since the HB will look to bend this run back across the formation. Stack fronts and run blitzes with a linebacker crashing downhill through the A or B gap are the biggest counters to this play, so if you see that pre-snap look to hot route a receiver or change the play entirely.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle area. Use this early in a series to set up HB Dive and HB Draw out of the same look so the defense has to respect both the quick hitting run and the delayed one. If the defense shows a stacked run front or heavy blitz look, check into a Zone Alert Smoke or Zone Alert Bubble from the same set to get a free access throw instead. Pair Inside Zone Split with PA Boot Slide and PA Fake Jet later in a drive once the defense starts crashing hard on run fits, since the run action will hold linebackers and open up the boot and jet fake concepts. On third and short or first and ten, this is a strong base call because it lets the HB pick a side rather than committing to a predetermined gap.
