Breakdown
Corner Strike from Pistol Weak Slot Open sends both outside receivers on deep corner routes breaking toward the sideline while the slot receivers underneath run drag routes crossing the middle at the sticks, creating a natural high low stretch on the strong side flat defender. The backfield stays in to pass protect, keeping this a five man protection look with no play action or RPO element attached. This is primarily a man beater that uses the corner routes to stack cushion off outside corners while the crossing drags give you a built in answer against man leverage, though the shallow drags also settle into soft spots versus zone if the corners bail deep. Primary read progression is boundary corner route first, working down to the backside corner route, then checking down to the drag crossing underneath if both are covered.
Defensive Reads
This play beats man coverage and Cover 3 sky looks where the corner has to run with the receiver vertically without safety help over the top. Cover 2 with a hard corner squatting on the flat is the toughest shell to beat here since the corner route runs directly into the deep half safety's zone. Watch for user controlled safeties rotating late to double the corner route, which is a common defensive counter in competitive play once opponents recognize this concept. If the underneath linebackers or nickel defenders widen out to carry the drag crossing routes, that opens a throwing lane for the corner route since the defense has committed extra bodies underneath. Key the flat defender's depth at the snap. If he sinks deep with the corner route, the drag underneath is wide open for an easy completion, but if he sits flat footed the corner route has single coverage over the top.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the corners are pressed or off. Off coverage is a green light to hammer the corner route since the defender already has a cushion deficit against a route breaking to the boundary. Look for two high safety shells before the snap. If the safeties rotate down into the box post snap, that usually signals man coverage underneath and the drag crossing routes become your quick answer against a blitz look. Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where you need a chunk gain but still have a checkdown built in if the corners get depth. Pair Corner Strike with Deep Curls or Mtn Y Stick earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect shorter routes, then hit the corner route for an explosive play once cornerbacks start sitting on underneath throws. Hot route the backside drag into a deeper dig or post if you are facing a defense that consistently plays two deep shells, since that adjustment attacks the seam vacated by the corner route stretching the deep defenders wide. Avoid throwing into the boundary corner route against Cover 2 unless you have a strong armed quarterback, since the flat to deep quarter defender can undercut the throw if timing is late.
