Breakdown

Mtn Flood is a three level flood concept run from Pistol Weak Slot Open with 20 personnel. The diagram shows a jet motion man streaking a deep corner route from the backside, the vertical seam runner clearing out to the deep third, and the flat route settling underneath, stacking the same side of the field with high, intermediate, and low stems. This is a classic Cover 3 beater because it stretches a single deep third defender and the flat defender vertically and horizontally at the same time, and the read progresses from the deep corner route to the vertical seam to the checkdown flat route underneath.

Defensive Reads

Diagnose the coverage shell pre-snap by counting deep safeties, a single high safety signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 which is exactly what this flood concept is designed to punish. Watch the flat defender and deep third corner defender post-snap, if the flat defender widens with the underneath route while the deep defender sits on the vertical seam, the corner route into the void behind is the answer. User the deep third defender to the flood side manually if you are on defense, since AI zone drops routinely bite on the seam route and leave the corner throw open behind them. Respect the vertical seam route against Cover 2 shells, a user controlled safety who jumps the corner route late can be baited into the seam throw over the top. Look for a hard blitz off the edge on the flood side, since a fast pressure package forces the quarterback to speed up the progression and can force an early checkdown throw to the flat before the corner route develops.

Usage Tips

Check the pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties shift your first read to the vertical seam route since the corner route into Cover 2 or Cover 4 will get squeezed by the deep half defender.

Use the motion to identify man versus zone coverage, if the defender runs with the motion man across the formation it is man coverage and you should lean on the corner route beating outside leverage, if the defender stays put you are looking at zone.

On third and medium to long, prioritize the flat route as a quick outlet if the deep corner window is late developing, since the flood concept naturally opens the underneath area against zone drops.

Pair Mtn Flood with Mtn Y Stick or Mtn Z Under in the same set to keep the defense guessing between a flood shot play and a quicker stick concept out of the identical Pistol Weak Slot Open look.

Take the vertical seam shot against single high looks when the linebacker carries the seam runner late, since the flood concept naturally clears the deep third defender toward the corner route.
