Wheel Switch out of Pistol Tight Slots sends the outside receiver on a deep vertical up the numbers while the inside receiver on that side runs a corner-breaking route underneath him, creating a natural switch release that confuses man defenders. On the backside, one receiver runs a deep post/flag up the seam while the other clears out on a shallow drag across the field. The running back releases from the backfield on a wheel route out of the backfield, working from the flat up the sideline, with the switch concept up top designed to spring him or the outside vertical loose against man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the wheel route out of the backfield against linebackers or slower defenders in man coverage, then works to the switch release vertical, and finally to the deep backside post as a shot play if the wheel gets picked up.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage on the running back is the biggest tell that this play is live, especially if a linebacker or slower defensive back is matched up on him out of the backfield. Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells with disciplined linebackers dropping to their zones can take away the wheel route by staying underneath and forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the running back or sitting in the flat, since that lurk technique can jump the wheel route and turn it into a pick six. Check safety depth before the snap, because a single high safety rotating late can help cover the deep backside post and eliminate the shot play option. If the defense shows blitz with the linebacker responsible for the running back, expect the wheel route to be wide open unless the quarterback has to get the ball out too quickly under pressure.
Usage Tips
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the receivers and linebackers shaded toward the running back, since the wheel route thrives when a linebacker has man responsibility on the back.
Motion the running back or check the flow of the defense before the snap to confirm if a linebacker or safety is likely to follow him into the wheel route.
Use hot routes to convert the backside drag into a hot read against pressure looks, giving you a quick outlet if the defense brings extra rushers off the edge.
Pair this play with HB Slip Screen and HB Draw earlier in a series so the defense starts keying run action, then hit them with the wheel route out of the backfield for a big gain when they overcommit.
Save Wheel Switch for third and medium or second and long situations where defenses are more likely to play man coverage or blitz, since the switch release and wheel combo punishes both.
