HB Dive out of Pistol Tight Slots is a straight downhill run play that sends the running back through the A gap directly behind the QB. The offensive line blocks a standard interior scheme, with the center and guards climbing to the second level while the TE and slot receivers stay in as pass protection or run block support on the perimeter. This is a pure run play designed to punish light boxes and overpursuing linebackers, hitting the hole fast before flow defenders can fill the gap. The primary read is the A gap first, bouncing to the nearest open crease if the interior is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a stacked box with eight or more defenders crowding the line, since this immediately signals Dive should be checked to a pass or perimeter run instead. Identify if the Mike linebacker is creeping down pre-snap, which tells you the defense is keying run and will fill the A gap fast. Look at defensive tackle alignment: a 1-technique shaded into the play-side A gap can blow this up before the back gets to the mesh point. Post-snap, track user-controlled defenders flowing downhill immediately at the snap, since aggressive user contain can beat the blocking scheme before the OL gets movement. This play struggles against strong interior defensive line stunts and A gap blitzes designed to occupy both guards at once.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see a light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, especially against nickel or dime personnel. Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz or over-committing to run flow before the snap. Pair HB Dive with HB Slip Screen and HB Draw from the same set to keep aggressive defenders honest and force them to respect multiple tempos out of the same look. Against stacked boxes or heavy run blitz packages, check out of Dive into Mesh or Stick Spacing to attack vacated underneath zones.
